Thoughts on Food Vol. 2: Callie Kimball

Today’s Thoughts on Food features one of my most favorite Twitter people, Callie Kimball. I originally came across her Twitter feed because she wrote a post on Wired about uncovering the dudes behind @FakeAPStylebook, and after I followed her, I saw her tweet to one of her friends about how many people who followed her that day because of that story would unfollow her when they figured out she wouldn’t tweet them back, and I then made it my mission to internet-befriend her. Fast forward, uh, a while, I guess, and it turns out she’s awesome AND we are Twitter friends. TAKE THAT.

Aside from being an internet detective, she’s also a fantastic playwright, a cube rat (her words) and was once a guest on this fantastically public access-y talk show. Check out her awesome interview below:

What is your first food memory?

I don’t have any good food memories. We were poor, so I had to eat a lot of bland, food bank food. I never went hungry, but I remember wanting to be able to have things like ‘Nilla Wafers.

What is your strongest food memory?

Watching lobsters skitter around on our kitchen floor before my Uncle boiled them alive. I was a sensitive child, but for some reason this did not upset me in the least. Probably because it was so much fun watching the cat freak out. (Note: Even though we were poor, we had lobster. We lived in Maine. It was cheaper than chicken.)

If you could eat one thing for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Chocolate ice cream or chocolate pudding.

What food terrifies you/makes your stomach turn the most?

DURIAN. I had one bite of durian ice cream by accident a few months ago and the taste lingered for hours.

What’s the best birthday cake you’ve ever had (on your birthday, of course)?

Ice cream cake wins, hands down.

Fries or side salad?

What’s a side salad?

If you could pick anyone to be on your lunchbox, who would you choose?

Actually, I have a lunchbox, and Conan O’Brien is on it. True story.

In a three-way battle to the death between Rachael Ray, Sandra Lee and Paula Deen, who would win and why?

I only know who Rachael Ray is because my mother asked for her cookbook for Christmas. I don’t know who the other women are. I’d have to say Rachael Ray, because she looks like she could cause trouble in a dark alley.

If you were to be slapped in the face with a fish, what fish would you choose?

Is that a metaphor?

What kind of food do you think James Lipton saves in his beard?

Crumpets with jam.

Anything else we should know about you?

I’m rather bendy.
